But let's get on to today. We left our fabulous one bedroom apartment we stayed in last night at the Port of Brookings and rolled down the coast through fog and chilly temps of 53 degrees. We made a quick stop at Wally World for a few essentials and COFFEE! And rolled on towards in search of Sea Lions and Harbor Seals.
Drive on southward! The coast is beautiful beyond words and photos. Something everyone I hope gets to experience. We searched for Sea Lions and Harbor Seals and finally found them in Crescent City. They, along with many loons, were sunbathing and playing in the harbor. I did remember to get a video of the Sea Lions and the link is below. Next stop was the Redwoods.
I believe we were both disappointed with the Redwoods. Yes, the trees are gigantic, but the whole experience was not what we had expected. I'm not sure what we expected, but it was more than a 30 minute ride through big trees. We had heard about a tree that a car could drive through, and a tree a coffee shop was in. Saw neither. Granted we didn't stop at the tourist trap called "Drive Thru Tree" and maybe that was our mistake. We never even found the Visitor's Center to get our Geek Books stamped. Let down.
From there is was just drive and observe and stop where we wanted, all in hopes of making it to Reno for nightfall and camping in the desert. We managed the driving and stopping, but not making it to Reno.
We stopped in the town of Trinidad which overlooked the most beautiful water and sight. Sailboats, boats, crystal blue waters, and huge boulders. Beautiful! After our lunch at Trinidad Bay Eatery & Gallery (Kevin said it was the best fish and chips he had ever had, and I had to agree) we took some time to photograph the bay.
Now time to really push on! We realized we had over 2,000 miles to travel to get back home and just the 6 days in which to do it. So eastward we turned. The temps quickly got up into the upper 90's and we were following a river that looked very inviting. I told Kevin I had always wanted to just jump into a river while bike riding in the heat. 1/2 hour later he pulled into a spot that had river access. Needless to say, I took the plunge. Boots and all and to me this was my answer to all the "Cold Water Challenges" I've received - done. Kevin said he couldn't be outdone and followed suit, much to the amusement of a couple that saw our bikes and followed us down to the river to ask us about them. The water was the Trinity River which was dam released from a lake upstream, Lewiston Lake, and the temps of the water was probably in the 60's. Refreshing!! We drove on, with water dripping from our boots but feeling great as the temperatures reading on our bikes was 97. Like riding in instant AC, until we dried out.
We are in Chico, CA right now and committing a cardinal sin - we are staying at a Best Western. Give us credit though, we drove into the down a dusk, quickly turning dark on us, and we stopped at 3 mom and pop motels. All I will say is none of them were up to our standards and we left in pursuit of a quality and clean room.
At dinner tonight we realized that we will need to put 500 miles a day on to get home. We unfortunately will have to give up our plans to hit Zion, and also will have to give up the beloved back roads we have enjoyed so much. Freeways and Interstates here we come. :( Hopefully will still find something to write about. Getting up early tomorrow to do some laundry - our jeans can walk without us in them.
Mileage was approximately 330. I'll double check in the morning. Rain Man is tired.

Me accepting all water challenges that had been sent to me. Done, can 't be challenged again. Yay!
Oops, have Kevin's video in twice and can't figure out how to delete it............
